The Ignited Minds Story

Ignited Minds was originally created by Alan Routhier in 2018 to meet the recreational and childcare needs of the youth of Gaston County with intellectual or physical deficits. Starting as a summer camp and then transitioning into childcare, Ignited Minds came to halt due to the Covid 19 Pandemic and the logistics of a new non-profit providing safe childcare. The experience enlightened Alan to the effectiveness and need for ABA services in the area.

In 2021, the non-profit was revived as an ABA center in Gastonia serving learners diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) between the ages of 2 through 12. Ignited minds is proud to standout within our community as a non-profit community-focused local organization with a commitment to stay loyal to that promise. Ignited Minds accepted its first official ABA clients in January of 2022.

In early 2023, Ignited Minds was able to acquire the suite next to its current clinic, which allowed for the company to open a teen section that is attached, but separated from the primary population. In February, Ignited Minds began intaking learners up to the age of 18.

Taking lead from Alan’s vision, Ignited Minds continues to grow in service of our community with a focus on personalized, science-based, and ethical services that help our learners and families live functional and independent lives.

Evidence-Based Results

The evidence-based approaches in ABA intervention are backed by decades of research showing intensive ABA treatment is the most successful approach for children with Autism.

  • Treatment is effective across an individual's lifespan (childhood through adulthood).

  • Young Children: Improve Cognition, Language, Social, & Self-Help Skills.

  • Older Individuals: Teaches behaviors essential to functioning at home, school, and in the community

  • ABA can decrease severe problem behaviors that endanger health & safety and that limit educational, residential, or vocational options

What does ABA look like?

A learner receiving ABA intervention will work 1 on 1 with a registered behavior technician (RBT) daily on communication, social and adaptive skills. The learner will be prompted through desired behaviors, with the slow fading of assistance and reinforcement for completion. Data is taken and analyzed to increase independence and plan an incremental introduction of necessary skills. A board certified behavior analayst (BCBA) will monitor data, train technicians and modify programs based on the individual’s data. Skills often targeted for developing include: self-management, requesting, responding to questions, toileting, sharing, transitioning away from a preferred item, functional play, daily living skills, etc. Behavior reduction programs are specifically designed based on the environmental factors surrounding the maladaptive behavior. Strategies might include labeling expectations and reward prior to a triggering event or prompting an alternative behavior that will meet the learner’s need.

This sounds pretty boring, but motivation is our specialty. We utilize preferred items, engaging activities, and gross motor to motivate compliance in new or non-preferred skills, and integrate social and play skills into play environments. Our facility has a large social play room, gross motor room, and sensory room to allow for the learner to engage and develop a wide range of skills.
